February update of the WDPA

The total number of protected area records in the February 2017 release of the WDPA is 233,526 comprising of 214,807 polygons and 18,719 points.

Highlights:

European Environment Agency (EEA) Common Database on Designated Areas ( CDDA) – Complete update of 49 countries resulting in the net addition of 1,352 records. Overall, the update records an increase in protected area coverage of 2,500 km² on land, and 12,000 km² in the marine environment. Major changes include: an increase of 6,500 km² terrestrial protected area coverage in Spain; an increase of 10,000 km² marine protected area coverage in the UK, and an increase of 6,500 km² marine protected areas coverage in France.

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Partial update of protected areas designated under international conventions and agreements, resulting in the removal of one Ramsar sites (Wetlands of International Importance) which was found to be located in Montenegro, not Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Mexico: Partial update of national-level protected areas, resulting in the addition of 8 protected area records. These 4 marine protected areas, each with two zones, were designated at the 13th meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity Conference of the Parties (CBD COP) in December 2016.

Ukraine: Addition of two new Ramsar sites (Wetlands of International Importance).

**Austria: Removal of 118 records, primarily designated as “Nature Reserves" and “Landscape Protection Areas", located in the province of Carinthia (Kärnten). The removal is due to a change in dataset permissions.

WDPA Manual

WDPA User Manual: We are pleased to announce that the WDPA User Manual has been translated into French and Spanish. Additionally, the Manual has been updated with an appendix on WDPA Data Contributor Agreements (Appendix 2), and has undergone general updates and edits based on user feedback.
