June update of WDPA

The total number of protected area records in the June 2017 release of the WDPA is 233,886 comprising of 215,305 polygons and 18,581 points.

Highlights:

Aruba: Complete update as part of an ongoing initiative to enhance protected areas data for the Caribbean region, including the addition of the Arikok National Park covering 18% of the island of Aruba.

Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba: Partial update of sites as part of an ongoing initiative to enhance protected areas data for the Caribbean region.

Antigua and Barbuda: Complete update as part of an ongoing initiative to enhance protected areas data for the Caribbean region.

Anguilla: Partial update of sites as part of an ongoing initiative to enhance protected areas data for the Caribbean region.

French Southern Territories: Partial update, including expansion of an existing boundary for Terres Australes Francaises National Nature Reserve to include several zones where fishing is prohibited, and the addition of a new protected area, the Périmètre de protection de la Réserve Naturelle Nationale des Terres australes françaises, to act as a protection zone around the Nature Reserve. These two protected areas now cover ~1.7 million km²

Qatar: Partial update of three protected areas for Qatar, including the UNESCO Man and Biosphere reserve of Al-Reem Biosphere Reserve.

Ramsar Sites, Wetlands of International Importance: Partial update to Ramsar sites across eight countries, resulting in the conversion of two points to polygons, the addition of two records in the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, and updated boundaries for eight records. More frequent updates of Ramsar data within the WDPA are anticipated, due to enhanced data flows between UNEP-WCMC, the Ramsar Secretariat and member states.

WDPA Manual

WDPA User Manual: We are pleased to announce that the WDPA User Manual has been translated into French and Spanish. Additionally, the Manual has been updated with an appendix on WDPA Data Contributor Agreements (Appendix 2), and has undergone general updates and edits based on user feedback. Version 1.4 of the User Manual is now available in three languages through the geodatabase download above and via the following links:
