July 2018 update of the WDPA

The total number of protected area records in the July 2018 release of the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) is 235,522 comprising of 218,527 polygons and 16,995 point, covering 245 countries and territories.

Highlights:

Colombia: Complete update of nationally designated areas, resulting in the addition of 398 polygon records, removal of 14 records, and updates or verification of a further 591 records. This is the first update from the national data provider since 2015.

Ecuador: Complete update of all national-level data, resulting in the addition of six polygon records for recently designated protected areas, and updates to a further 70 records.

United Arab Emirates: Complete update of all protected areas data, resulting in the addition of seven polygon records. In addition, all 36 of the country's other protected areas were either updated or verified.

Republic of Korea: Partial update, resulting in the addition of 329 polygon records, of which 271 records are for new Catchment Reserve Areas. This update represents an 18% increase in the number of national-level protected areas data for the country.

Ramsar Sites, Wetlands of International Importance: Update of 3 new sites from Poland. This update is part of a series of updates on Ramsar data within the WDPA, resulting from enhanced data flows between UNEP-WCMC, the Ramsar Secretariat and member states.

WDPA Manual

WDPA User Manual: We are pleased to announce that the WDPA User Manual has been translated into French, Spanish, Russian and Arabic. Additionally, the Manual has been updated with an appendix on WDPA Data Contributor Agreements (Appendix 2), and has undergone general updates and edits based on user feedback. New: WDPA Manual is now available in Arabic

New: Changes to attribute value for World Heritage sites – the value for World Heritage sites in the 'DESIG' and 'DESIG_ENG' fields of the WDPA attribute table, has changed from 'World Heritage Site' to 'World Heritage Site (natural or mixed)'. The new value clarifies that the WDPA includes natural and mixed World Heritage sites, but deliberately does not include cultural Word Heritage sites

New: Protected Area Management Effectiveness– Country pages on Protected Planet now display information on the management effectiveness of national-level protected areas, as reported by data providers. Pages for individual protected areas now also provide information on whether the sites have Monitoring and Evaluation data in the Global Database on Protected Area Management Effectiveness (GD-PAME).
