May 2018 update of the WDPA

The total number of protected area records in the May 2018 release of the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) is 234,694 comprising of 217,699 polygons and 16,995 point, covering 245 countries and territories.

Highlights:

A total of 41 countries and territories were updated in the May release of the WDPA which resulted in the addition of 613 new records, removal of over 2,000 records from public viewing, the update of over 31,000 records, and the conversion of 33 point records to polygons. Among the updates were the following:

Natura 2000: Complete update of Sites of Community Importance and Special Protection Areas records across 28 countries, resulting in a net increase of 235 polygon records and updates to a further 29,458 polygon records. The Natura 2000 network of protected sites is designated under the European Habitats and Bird Directives, and data are made available by the European Environment Agency, This version is the composite version of all updates by EU Member States made throughout 2017.

Brazil: Four new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) designated around the Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago and around the volcanic and remote tropical Islands of Trindade and of Martim Vaz, lying 1,000km from the Northeast coast of Brazil. Two large MPAs (IUCN management category V) now cover 793,005 km2, and two separate no take MPAs (IUCN management category III) cover 115,546km2. The total area covered by these MPAs equates to 908, 551 km2, which combined with existing coverage of 61,881 km2 means that 26.4% of Brazil's marine area is now covered by protected areas, up from 1.7%

China: At the instruction of the Chinese national data provider, the Ministry of Environmental Protection (NIES), the majority of national level protected area records have been removed from the WDPA. These protected areas have not been degazetted, but the records have been removed from the Protected Planet website and the version of the WDPA available to download.

Dominican Republic: Complete update of all national level protected area records, resulting in the addition of 54 new polygon records and updates to 84 polygon records following their validation by the national data provider. This includes the expanded Bancos de la Plata y de la Navidad Marine Mammal Sanctuary which now covers an area over 35,000km2.

Guatemala: Complete update of national-level protected area records including the addiiton of 107 new protected areas.This is the first comprehensive update of Guatemala's protected areas network since 2009.

Honduras: Complete update of national-level protected area records with the addition of 9 new protected areas including 2 new proposed Marine Protected Areas, the 860 km2 Bahda de Tela Wildlife Refuge and the 9,000 km2 Cayos Miskitos Marine National Park.

Indonesia: Complete update of all protected areas data for Indonesia, including the addition of 89 new protected areas,

Madagascar:Update of all existing protected areas data.

Malaysia: Complete update of national-level protected area records, Addition of 7 new Marine Protected Areas for Malaysia and update of all existing data.

Peru: Complete update of the protected areas data-set for Peru, with 22 new Private Conservation Areas new sites being added, 25 sites which were previously seperate have all been, after discussion with the data provider, merged into one site, and there has been the change in designation of Yaguas Restricted Zone to Yaguas National Park.

Paraguay: Complete update of national-level protected area records, more than doubling the country's data from 44 to 95 records, all of which are now in polygon format. All of these records are now polygon features.This is the first comprehensive update of Paraguay's protected areas network since 2004.

Ramsar Sites, Wetlands of International Importance: Update of new sites from Argentina and Spain. This update is part of a series of updates on Ramsar data within the WDPA, resulting from enhanced data flows between UNEP-WCMC, the Ramsar Secretariat and member states.
