October 2018 update of the WDPA

The total number of protected area records in the October 2018 release of the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) is 235,670 comprising of 218,613 polygons and 17,057 points, covering 245 countries and territories.

Highlights:

Argentina: Complete update: Verification and update of all records within Argentina. This included the addition of 34 new polygon records comprising of nationally and internationally designated sites. The largest of these is the UNESCO-MAB Biosphere Reserve Patagonia Azul with a reported area of approximately 31 000km2. As well as the additions made, a number of polygon records were converted to points due to incorrect representation of their boundaries, whilst some designations no longer active were also removed.

Cyprus: Partial update: A total of 40 polygons of nationally designated protected areas were added.

Isle of Man Complete update: Includes the addition of 10 new polygons representing a series of Marine Nature Reserves which now encompass the majority of the coastal area around the island, the largest of which is 185km2.

Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance: Partial update: The addition of 8 Ramsar Sites in China and individual sites were also added in Anguilla, Curaçao, UK, and Myanmar. The largest of these was Tibet Selincuo Wetlands in China with a reported area of 18 936km2 which has an IUCN Management Category of Ia.

WDPA Manual

WDPA User Manual: We are pleased to announce that the WDPA User Manual has been translated into French, Spanish, Russian and Arabic. Additionally, the Manual has been updated with an appendix on WDPA Data Contributor Agreements (Appendix 2), and has undergone general updates and edits based on user feedback. New: Protected Area Management Effectiveness– Country pages on Protected Planet now display information on the management effectiveness of national-level protected areas, as reported by data providers. Pages for individual protected areas now also provide information on whether the sites have Monitoring and Evaluation data in the Global Database on Protected Area Management Effectiveness (GD-PAME).
