July 2019 update of the WDPA

The total number of protected area records in the July 2019 release of the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) is 242,837 comprising 222,080 polygons and 20,757 points, covering 245 countries and territories.

Costa Rica: Complete update of national level protected area records in Costa Rica, resulting in the addition of 24 polygon records and the removal of 47 records. The new polygons comprise 21 records for sites designated as 'national wildlife refuges' (covering a combined area of 80 km2), two sites designated under 'marine management areas' ('Montes submarinos' covers 9,622 km2) and a site designated as 'protected zone' (Las Baulas de Guanacaste').

Peru: Partial update, resulting in the addition of two polygon records designated as 'private conservation areas' ('Arroyo Negro' and 'Communal San Pablo - Catarata Gocta') and updates to the governance type (GOV_TYPE) and ownership type (OWN_TYPE) attributes for all private conservation area records in Peru.

Seychelles: Complete update of national-level protected area records, resulting in the addition of 14 new polygon records, one new point record ('King Ross nature reserve), and the conversion of 10 point records to polygon records.
