March 2020 update of the WDPA

The total number of protected area records in the March 2020 release of the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) is 248, 330 comprising 227,090 polygons and 21,240 points, covering 245 countries and territories.

March 2020 also sees another release of the World Database on other effective area-based conservation measures (WD-OECM). The WD-OECM can be combined with the WDPA to reveal how measures beyond protected areas contribute to conservation networks. It can be downloaded here.

Highlights:

Burundi: Tabular update and verification of all national sites through COMIFAC (BIOPAMA)

Central African Republic: Tabular update and verification of all national sites through COMIFAC (BIOPAMA)

Cameroon: Tabular update and verification of all national sites through COMIFAC (BIOPAMA)

Congo: Tabular update and verification of all national sites through COMIFAC (BIOPAMA), ane one Ramsar site updated from point to polygon as data was available on RSIS. The rest were verified through BIOPAMA

Democratic Republic of Congo: Tabular update and verification of all national sites through COMIFAC (BIOPAMA)

Comoros: In 2016, the Union of the Comoros through the Ministry of the Environment, with the support of the UNDP and the GEF engaged in the establishment of the national network of protected areas by the creation of five new protected areas and the strengthening of Mohéli National Park, the first park in the Comoros. This update reflects those changes.

Ecuador: Three new terrestrial sites have been added to the national designated PAs.

Gabon: Tabular update and verification of all national sites through COMIFAC (BIOPAMA)

Guinea: One polygon added - obtained at a BIOPAMA meeting in Dakar.

Equatorial Guinea: Tabular update and verification of all national sites through COMIFAC (BIOPAMA)

Greenland: Review of GRL's Ramsar sites - including the transition of one point to polygon. Assigned to Ramsar Sec at the behest of the national data provider

Honduras: This is a full update of national sites. 5 new Privately Protected Areas have been added and -previous Cuyamel – Omoa National Park is replaced by Omoa National Park and Cuyamel Wildlife Refuge (both with Proposed status).

Maldives: Addition of 19 new polygons and verified all national sites.

Malaysia: New MPA added by NGO and verified by gov. Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area

Rwanda: Tabular update and verification of all national sites through COMIFAC (BIOPAMA)

São Tomé and Príncipe: Tabular update and verification of all national sites through COMIFAC (BIOPAMA)

Seychelles: This update includes an explansion to the MPA network in the Seychelles. Most notable changes are to Aldabra Group MSP Zone 1 and Amirantes to Fortune Bank MSP Zone 2. These MPAs have expanded Seychelle's coverage by 150,000km2.

Chad: Tabular update and verification of all national sites through COMIFAC (BIOPAMA). One new polygon addded.

Tanzania: Change of name: Kalambo River Forest Nature Reserve changed to Kalambo Forest Nature Reserve

Uganda: Verificatoin of all the sites under Uganda Willdilfe Authority management. No longer exists. Nyaburogo Wildlife Sanctuary was removed. It was annexed on Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve thus its part of the reserve.

Samoa: Update of Samoa's National Parks, Reserves, and Marine Protected Areas, including data not updated since 1987. This update was facilitated by the Secretariat for the Pacific Regional Environment Programme, supported by the BIOPAMA programme. Also a complete update of Samoa's Ramsar sites, including the correction of a boundary and the replacement of a point with a boundary. This update was facilitated by the Secretariat for the Pacific Regional Environment Programme, supported by the BIOPAMA programme.

South Africa: Full update incorporating the changes made in the final quarter of 2019 to the national dataset (SAPAD). 22 new sites added. York and Brussel Private Nature Reserves are now removed from the WDPA, replaced by Balule Nature Reserve

United States of America: This removal was an urgent request from the data providers to have the marine coverage of the USA accurate for World Conservation Congress. These sites are no longer being managed as protected areas; they are managed as fisheries. This request comes from NOAA (The authoritative agency for MPAs in the USA), validated by USGS, who are the official data providers of USA data to the WDPA, through the PAD-US dataset. The next PAD-US version (2.0) is due to be submitted to UNEP-WCMC in the coming months, in time for inclusion in the Protected Planet 2020 Report and CBD COP 15.
