Global Protected Planet Reports

Over a decade of pioneering research

In 2015, the members of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2022, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) was adopted by Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) during the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 15). The Framework builds on the Convention’s previous Strategic Plans, including the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2010-2020 and its 20 Aichi Biodiversity Targets, and sets out an ambitious pathway to reach the global vision of a world living in harmony with nature by 2050. The global protected and conserved area estate plays an important role in achieving these commitments.

The Protected Planet Report series tracks international progress towards achieving global biodiversity targets. The current focus of the series is Target 3 of the KMGBF, with previous editions tracking Aichi Biodiversity Target 11, the previous area-based conservation target set under the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2010-2020, and Sustainable Development Goals 14 and 15. The series includes reports that cover the Global, Regional and National level.

2020

The Protected Planet Report 2020 (published in 2021) was the first in the series to be entirely digital in format. It provided the final report on the status of Aichi Biodiversity Target 11, and looked to the future as the world prepared to adopt a new post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

2024
